This race was unique in that it was run twice. A field of 19 faced the starter, and of these 14 got away without a hitch at flag fall, but the remaining 5 were left behind and chose not to race. The outsider Antonio won the race in 3 minutes 18 seconds after which the Steward's declared a false start. A re-run was ordered, although only 10 faced the starter. This second race saw Sir Walter get the better of Wrangler who hadm but now, finished runner-up in both races. The matter was referred to the Stewards of the Jockey Club and their judgement is shown at the bottom of the page. Antonio raced 13 times in his career, winning 6 and being placed second in a further 6 races. | Over Round 120% | ||

Jockey Club Stewards report from Newmarket on Tuesday 4th October 1819 The Stewards of the Jockey Club having taken into consideration the case laid before them by the Stewards of Doncaster Races, respecting the St Leger, and having examined Mr Lockwood, the person appointed by the Stewards of Doncaster to start and judge the race, are decidedly of opinion that the race should have been given to Antonio; and consequently that the Stewards should not have allowed a second race. |
